We must be honest with ourselves; being a single mom is hard work. It’s difficult to manage the multiple demands and responsibilities as a single mom. These demands can typically become stressful, and that’s completely understandable. Sometimes these stressful demands can cause you to become irritable. When you become irritated, it’s likely that you express your irritation through specific behaviors such as yelling and having a short temper towards those around you, including your family, friends, and co-workers. If you tend to respond to stressful situations in ways that don’t make you feel good, you are not alone. Anxiety (a reaction to situations perceived as stressful or dangerous) is a common experience for many single mothers. In 2014, a research study in Singapore on single mothers of various ethical and socio-economic backgrounds concluded that the prevalence of mood disorders was found to be associated with age: younger mothers (aged 18-34 years) having nearly 3 times the risk than older women aged 50-64 years. The study also acknowledged previous research findings that show single mothers are at higher risk for both physical and mental health disorders as compared to married mothers.

Causes of Stress and Anxiety

Anxiety can arise from several different factors such as environmental factors (stress from personal relationships, job, school, finances, a traumatic event, etc.) genetics, side effects from underlying medical conditions, brain chemistry and even from the use of or withdrawal from an illicit substance(s). It’s important to keep in mind that anxiety can result from a combination of one or more of these factors.

We’ve all heard the saying, “the truth shall set you free.” Although this can be true, accepting truth can sometimes be uncomfortable. On the other hand, once you get past the feeling of discomfort and embrace truth, to any degree in your life experiences, you’ll feel a sense of renewal, empowerment, strength, the gain of wisdom, and even new beginnings. I say this because the fact that you are even reading this article shows that you are accepting your truth in struggling with anxiety. Before exploring ways of dealing with anxiety naturally, you must embrace this truth: You come first. Yes, I said it: before your work, your household responsibilities, your partner, your marriage, your family, your friends, your children. The important key here is to know you can’t pour from an empty cup. You must fill yourself up first with self-care (showing love for oneself) before you can take care of others. If you don’t take care of yourself first, you are constantly giving away all of your energy without re-charging yourself.

The exciting thing about dealing with anxiety naturally is not only will it help with anxiety, these treatments can also be used to help you “re-charge” so that you can fill yourself up with positive energy. Simplicity is a valuable thing, especially for single mothers with so much to do in only 24 hours each day. Alright, now you are ready to learn and explore 21 ways of dealing with anxiety naturally:

1. Deep Breathing Exercises

You sit or lie flat in a comfortable position, place one hand on your belly just below the ribs and the other hand on your chest. Take a deep breath through your nose and then allow your stomach to push your hand out. While exhaling, breathe out as if you were making fog on a window. Deep breathing is a great way to deal with anxiety naturally, plus its free!

2. Guided Imagery

Guided imagery exercises can be as a quick as 5 seconds to lasting for minutes. For example, when you are experiencing any symptoms of anxiety, take a moment and imagine yourself being surrounded by white light. Imagine that the white light is a protective barrier, infused with the high energy of love and peace, and nothing can penetrate it. It is yours to consume and embrace at that moment. Take deep breaths as you imagine yourself being surrounding within this bubble of white light. Guided imagery can help one in dealing with anxiety naturally while providing other great benefits revealed through evidence-based research such as heightened access to emotional depth, spirituality, intuition, creativity, abstract thinking, and empathy.

3. Self-Hypnosis

Self-hypnosis, also referred to as hypnotherapy, can be a successful way of reducing stress and opening the mind to new ideas or thought process, especially when dealing with negative behaviors. For hypnotherapy to work, you must want to be hypnotized, not be overly skeptical, not be frightened of hypnotherapy, and not have the tendency to over-analyze the process.

Nutrition can also have an effect on how you feel, including the symptoms you experience with anxiety. Omega fatty acids found in foods such as wild salmon, flaxseed, walnuts, and chia seeds, are great for dealing with anxiety naturally.

10. Journaling

You’ll be amazed at how you’ll feel afterward. Journaling allows you to become aware of your thoughts and patterns of behaviors from a different perspective (outside looking in). Try reading your journal entries at a future date after your journal entry. You all be able to identify what types of events, people, actions, or experiences may be causing your anxiety.

I tend to write positive statements such as, “ I am love and will share the energy of love to others today,” on my mirror in the mornings with cheap lipstick. I keep it there for a few days and change it up. I like it because it brings a sense of sexy, feminine empowerment energy within myself.

16. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a powerful mechanism for holistic healing. Burning incense or essential oils such as lavender can help you feel relaxed and calm. You can also purchase an oil diffuser necklace that will allow you to keep your most favorite scents near you to smell while you are going about your day.

17. Relaxing Bubble Bath

A hot bubble bath with lit candles and music playing can be a vacation at home. Treat yourself to a relaxing bubble bath after everyone in your home is sound asleep. Hot baths in a relaxing environment are effective in dealing with anxiety naturally.

18. Nature

Sound therapy, also known as sound healing, is a vibrational medicine. Sound therapy goes beyond relaxation and is known to stimulate healing within oneself. Tuning Tibetan singing bowls, listening to nature sounds at night while you’re falling asleep or while completing projects around the house are some examples of sound therapy.
